At the center of the intellectual awakening of the 18th century stood one man whose written word has stood the test of time: Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. A polymath, a giant of German literature, a lawyer, a government minister, a theater director, and a prodigious collector and naturalist, he was a revolutionary in every way, determined to push the boundaries of perception and learning. Driven by an insatiable desire for knowledge, his creative versatility knew no bounds. The philosophical depth of Faust, the lyrical delicacy of his poetry, and the breadth of scientific inquiry that lay behind his color theory and botanical treatises were epochal in their significance and their diversity and far-reaching influence testify to Goethe's genius. As poet and statesman, advisor, friend, and lover, he left an indelible mark on the world around him and continues to serve as a source of inspiration and vision to this day.
With the support of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar and the Goethe National Museum located there, Montblanc dedicates its limited edition Writers Edition Homage to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe to this universal genius, focusing in particular on his literary works. Writing was Goethe’s lifeblood. The largest edition of his complete works and writings currently comprises 40 volumes, containing around 3,000 poems. His drama Götz von Berlichingen was published anonymously in 1773, but just a year later, a period of frenzy led him to write The Sorrows of Young Werther in less than four weeks, catapulting the 25-year-old lawyer to overnight fame. The Sorrows of Young Werther put German literature on the European literary map. It is the story of a young man caught between love and duty, between burning passion and social convention. An entire generation is reflected in the fate of the unfortunate Werther. The novel has even influenced this limited edition: its impressive description of marble inspired the appearance of the precious lacquer of the cap and barrel, while the engraving on the barrel ring recalls the framing of the copperplate illustration in an early edition of Werther. Another key design element refers to Goethe's house in Weimar.
The shade of blue and the pattern of the precious lacquer echo the colour and texture of the wallpaper in the Juno room in the writer's house. The characteristic gilded and platinum fittings also recall other decorative elements in the interior. Around the top of the cap is engraved a graceful pattern resembling a string of clover leaves. This detail comes from a letter that Goethe wrote to his beloved Charlotte Buff, the model for the character Lotte in his novel The Sorrows of Young Werther. The epistolary novel by the young Goethe, a masterpiece of the Sturm und Drang movement, was celebrated as a stroke of genius and above all as a masterpiece of world literature. In a letter dated 26 January 1827, Goethe interpreted the term "world literature" much more literally than today, denoting a worldwide process of literary communication and mutual artistic stimulation. Just as he incorporated elements of Persian poetry into his West-Eastern Diwan cycle, such literature should strive to be an expression of universality, transcending all linguistic, ethnic and temporal barriers. As a symbol of this concept of global literary dialogue, embodied in Goethe's concept of "world literature", the cap is shaped like a globe, crowned with Montblanc emblem. Faust's thirst for knowledge and his irrepressible desire to uncover the secrets of the world reflect Goethe's own passion for the exploration of natural phenomena. In his old age, he even considered his scientific achievements more valuable than his poetic ones. In his Theory of Colours, he touched on a wide range of topics, from physics to the psychology of colour, opening up a completely new perspective on the nature of colour. He also devoted himself to optics and anatomy, biology and geology, and archived thousands of scientific specimens in jars and boxes. The slightly curved shape of the cap, reminiscent of a historic apothecary jar, is a tribute to Goethe's achievements as a scientist and collector. The leaf-shaped clasp pays homage to his studies in morphology and specifically his design of the archetypal plant form. He even translated this idea into verse in his didactic love poem The Metamorphosis of Plants. The inspiration for the overall design of this limited edition, especially for the cylinder and cone, is a type of historical writing instrument with which Goethe recorded all his knowledge, observations and the fruits of his seemingly boundless poetic imagination.
